Rectors Beg FG to Increase Funding for Polytechnics, Colleges

 Council of Heads of Polytechnics and Colleges of Technology in Nigeria has appealed to the Federal Government to increase the funding of tertiary education in the country.

COHEADS said that underfunding of polytechnics and colleges of technology was a major factor militating against the growth of education in Nigeria.

At the 137th regular meeting of COHEADS, which held at Federal Polytechnic Nekede, Imo State, its chairman, Mas’ud Elelu, said that the organisation was appealing for improvement on the funding of technical education to assist polytechnics to improve in researches and learning.

Elelu, who is the Rector of Kwara State Polytechnic said, “COHEADS is fully committed to the roadmap for Nigeria Education sector brought by the Federal Ministry of Education.

“We appeal for further improvement on the funding of technical education in order for the polytechnics to make their impact on this change reform policy.

“COHEADS commends the NBTE for its commitment towards making technical and vocational education a priority for our teeming youths.

“While I welcome my colleagues from various polytechnics and colleges of technology, I urge you to participate fully in the deliberations of the 137th COHEADS meeting so that at the end, we could reach resolutions capable of turning around technical education for the enhancement of the much desired technological take-off of Nigeria.”

The host rector, Dr. Celestine Njoku, said that polytechnics in the country needed more funds because of the enormous roles they are playing in the education sector.

Njoku said that Federal Polytechnic, Nekede, was committed to academic excellence, adding Nigeria needed to invest in education.
